Blood Sugar Balance and Body Fat %

By Deanna Mautz, BSN RN

My last post  ARE YOU METABOLICALLY STABLE? I shared a little about my personal journey into metabolic health, how routine lab values drew concern to my blood glucose levels.  I was concerned because elevated of blood glucose and insulin are the foundation of most chronic health conditions, including cancer.

This post contains a self-quiz and recommended lab tests to help you assess your metabolic health. If you suspect that blood sugar balance is an issue for you, keep reading this blog to learn more or contact me for a consult.

BLOOD SUGAR BALANCE

Do you have a self professed sweet tooth?

Do you get “hangry” if you skip or delay a meal?

Do you regularly skip breakfast?

Do you crave and regularly eat carbohydrates (breads, potatoes, pasta, cereal)?

Do you consume more than 25g of sugar per day?  See image below for reference

Is your body fat content over 25%? See image below for reference

Do you feel tired after a meal?

Do you or any family members have a history or diagnosis of metabolic syndrome, hypoglycemia, prediabetes, insulin resistance, polycystic ovarian disease, fatty liver, pancreatic cancer, and pancreatitis, Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes?

Do you consume alcoholic beverages more than 3 times per week?

LOOKING AT YOUR LABS

Blood glucose markers are ways to assess and monitor how the body is handling glucose.

  • HbA1c

  • Fasting Glucose

  • IGF-1

  • Fasting Insulin

It is recommended to have these blood sugar markers tested to know your baseline levels before making any dietary or nutrition changes. These labs can also help determine if high blood glucose or sugars are contributing to any health conditions and/or symptoms you may be experiencing.
