Gastritis

This week I have talked about heartburn and constipation.

So let's talk about Gastritis...

What is that?!?!  It’s a digestive problem caused by stomach inflammation and erosion of the lining of the stomach. A diagnosis of gastritis is made when tests reveal that someone has marked inflammation of the stomach or persistent gastritis symptoms.

Common symptoms of gastritis include stomach pains, bloated stomach, burning and other pains.

What Causes Gastritis?

Lifestyles that including smoking, eating a poor diet and using over-the-counter painkillers frequently, contribute to inflammation within the stomach and increase the odds of developing gastritis. If you’re middle-aged or older, overweight or obese, experience chronic stress, and frequently eat processed foods, you are more likely to expereince gastritis.

Natural Gastritis Relief & Dietary Remedies

I never advise my clients to self-diagnose. If you think your stomach pains might be caused by gastritis, you should consult with your provider. Once diagnosed and you know what is causing your symptoms, a few changes to your diet can get you feeling better quickly.

Discusss with your provider ways to manage your symptoms, which may include medications. And the following will help in your quest to treat symptoms naturally.

1. Remove Irritating Foods from Your Diet

  • Consume very little packaged, processed foods

  • Replace processed foods with more fresh foods (vegetables and minimal fruit).

  • Avoid sugary drinks, and consume eight glasses or more of water per day.

  • Avoid eating one to two big meals per day, (divide meals up into smaller amounts through the day)

  • Experiment to see if eating spicy foods makes your gastritis symptoms worse

  • Track your symptoms to better understand what your triggers might be

2. Consume More Beneficial Nutrients

  • Vegetables, fruits, high quality rotten and healthy fats

  • High-antioxidant foods (berries, onions, garlic, squash, bell peppers, nuts, soaked legumes/beans, sprouted whole grains, sea vegetables, and grass-fed meat or pasture-raised poultry).

  • Supplements like omega-3 fatty acids, probiotics and vitamin C can also be beneficial for gastritis sufferers.

3. Lower Inflammation Through Exercise and Controlling Stress

  • Exercise regularly for at least 30 minutes per day five days per week.

  • Stress relieving or Mindset practices, including deep breathing, yoga, tai chi, acupuncture and meditation

Ultimately you can help reduce gastritis symptoms by avoiding irritating foods, eating more Whole Foods with beneficial nutrients, lowering inflammation through exercise, and controlling stress.
